The SC80 represented a modest package of updates to the all-conquering SC79
design. The dash hoop was lowered and the roll cage forward stays repositioned to allow the cockpit body section to be lowered to reduce drag and the aluminium sidepods were replaced with removable fibreglass versions supported by an aluminium outriggers, being cheaper and easier to replace in the event of damage, that apart the design remained relatively unchanged. During the course of the season half moon rear wheel spats started to appear perhaps in response to the Lola T590s faired rear, a trend which was to develop into the fully faired rear of the SC81.
