T590

Geoff Farmer in his Lola T590. (Dave Cusselle)

Having dominated Sports 2000 in the U.K for the first two seasons Lola it seems saw no reason to offer anything new for the 1979 season and were caught napping by the new Tiga SC79 which dominated the 1979 championship.  The T590 was Lola's attempt to redress the balance.  Ultra low drag and pioneering a laid back driving position it looked like a major advance but although it acheived some success in continental Europs and the U.S. it only marginally reduced Tiga's stranglehold on the British championship taking five wins in the hands of Frank Sytner, Mike Blanchett and Chris Alford to Tiga's fourteen. The general opinion was that the monocoque lacked the required torsional rigidity and the ultra low drag bodywork created less downforce than the wedge shaped Tigas.
